Here is a Google Earth map of Tinkers Knob where the rescue occurred. The PCT goes right along this ridge. It is high elevation, 8000 - 9000 feet. This area is very exposed with no shelter. It is definitely not an area that you would want to spend a cold, stormy night. The coordinates are 39.24500 N by 120.284 W, for you map enthusiasts. It is therapeutic for me to research the area to understand the geography and conditions that were involved.
I found a blog account of a hiker climbing up to Tinkers Knob and back. It has a good description of the trail and surrounding area as well as several pictures of the terrain. You may click here if you want to read the account.

I am so very sorry to hear you lost your mom. Wow, I didn't realize your mom was such an avid backpacker, the same as my mom. I backpacked the Sierras EVERY summer with my mom. Totally awesome memories to have.
RoDawna and I climbed Tinker Knob in 1997 in shorts and T-shirts, it is so very beautiful, however it sounds like the conditions were less than desirable, last week.
Take comfort that the Lord is coming so very shortly, that your mother made her peace with the Lord as she struggled against the cold conditions she faced, and that when she passed she was warm, and had assurance that her Salvation is sure in the sacrifice of Jesus.

Dear Dave and Bev,
April and I learned this morning of this terrible tragedy. We are shocked and deeply saddened. I had a wonderful visit with your folks just a few days ago and they were leaving the next morning for this hike and excitedly told me about their plans.
Thank you for the information and pictures. We treasure our memories of the wonderful hikes we have shared with your folks, and will always remember the joy, excitement, and drive Phyllis had for the PCT and hiking in general. This is a huge loss.
We take comfort in the fact that Jesus is coming soon--and we will not have to separated long. What a day of rejoicing that will be! In that we take great courage.
