Dear Don, David, Heather, Cheryl and Family,

I have been groping all week for just the right words to say to all of you about this tragic loss of my dearest friend of 48 years, but they just aren't coming together as I would wish. So many memories, so many years of doing things together, of sharing, of laughing, of caring. How can i express what my aching heart is feeling? Doug and I can't believe she's gone.

Phyllis and I became instant friends at the beginning of our Freshman year at PUA, the year being 1960. Our lockers were right next to each other, and we spent time together in Principal Morley's office, getting help with Algebra. The first three years of academy we were very close, doing lots of things together. Then Phyllis' family moved to Walla Walla, and we continued seeing each other when we could. When Phyllis and Don married and later moved to Clackamas, OR, we as families, went on hikes together, ate in each other's homes, hiked together, swam in their pool and stayed on occasion at each other's homes, when in travel.

A couple years ago Phyllis and Don invited us to stay with them during Campmeeting, instead of "tenting it" on the Grounds. It happened to be an extremely hot July, and their gracious offer was just wonderful, as we were able to escape the heat and enjoy air conditioning for a time in the evenings. Our daughter, Debby, and her new husband, Steve, along with our grandchildren, Taylor and Zachary, also were invited to stay. It was glorious!

Phyllis always was a gracious hostess, presenting a beautiful table, complete with gorgeous flowers from her garden and often, either serenading us with her own piano talents, or some special piece on stereo. We were so blessed this last July, after the 3-mile walk-run event together with Phyllis & Don during the Gladstone Campmeeting Session, when Doug & I were invited for a swim in their pool and lunch on their patio deck, overlooking the golf course. Their friend gave us a vocal solo, which was just heavenly. I am thankful we had that time together.

My fondest memories of Phyllis are about who she really was: kind, thoughtful, caring, always happy, always positive, very generous. She had a passion to help young people financially through school, our oldest daughter being one of them. She and I shared the same values, which made our friendship even more endearing. We talked of our love of Jesus and our love for our husbands, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. That was primary and of greatest importance to her. She believed in a vegetarian cuisine and in physical and aerobic exercise, weather jogging, walking, biking or swimming, as being a deterrent to disease. And I think that her hobbies and mine were our flower and vegetable gardens, and being out in the diversified and great out-of-doors.

My dear Phyllis will be greatly missed. I look longingly for the day when there will be no more separation, and we can have endless days together again.

May God be ever close to all of you, especially during this difficult time. We are praying for you all. And, Don, please know Doug and I consider you and yours part of our family, and you will ALWAYS be welcome in our home and in our lives, whenever we can get together.

Lovingly,
Jan and Doug Halley
